After Samsung Galaxy S7 edge was voted the best smartphone of 2016, GSMA, the pan-European organization hosting the Mobile World Congress trade fair every year, among other things, has decided to award another distinction to a brand new device announced this year, the Xperia XZ Premium.

According to GSMA, Sony Xperia XZ Premium is the “Best New Smartphone or Connected Mobile Device at MWC 2017,” an achievement that not many would have thought to be possible considering the fierce competition at the top tier.

Even though the Samsung Galaxy S8 was a no-show at this year's MWC, there were other flagships in high regard that were unveiled in the last week or so, including the Huawei P10 and P10 Plus, or the LG G6.

Sony, on the other hand, launched no less than four new devices, and it's the only handset maker that introduced a flagship powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 835 processor, the Xperia XZ Premium, the same device that's been awarded with the high distinction mentioned earlier.

The powerful Snapdragon 835 chip is not the only thing that made GSMA vote the Xperia XZ Premium as the best new smartphone at MWC 2017.

The flagship boasts a stunning 5.46-inch display with 4K resolution and an impressive 19-megapixel rear-facing camera with Motion Eye technology for slow-mo video in 960 fps.

The Xperia XZ Premium is Sony's second 4K smartphone after the Xperia X5 Premium launched back in November 2015. Unfortunately, the Xperia XZ Premium won't be available for purchase until late spring.

Basically, Sony's 4K smartphone will make its debut on the market only after Samsung launches the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ flagships.

Also, the Japanese company has announced the smartphone will be available in two colors: Luminous Chrome and Deepsea Black. No word on the price just yet.
