This weekend we brought you news that a batch of live pictures popped up showing two unannounced Sony phones, the Xperia C5 Ultra and the Xperia M5. Well, today, the Japanese device maker has made the two models official.

The two handsets apparently pertain to the so-called “Super mid-range” category, offering an advanced camera performance, long battery life, and high performance on the budget. Let’s take them each and see what they offer.

Xperia M5

The Sony Xperia M5 arrives with a 5-inch display with FHD resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels). It is water-resistant (IP65/68 certification) and will draw life from an octa-core MediaTek Helio X10 processor clocked at 2.0GHz.

Moreover, the phone bundles 3GB of RAM and 16GB of expandable memory, and it will also be the beneficiary of a 2,600 mAh battery and a 13MP selfie camera.

But most interestingly, on the front of the Xperia M5 lives an advanced 21MP main camera which features a Sony IMX230 sensor, 5x digital zoom, fast auto focus (0.2 seconds) and 4K video recording.

Xperia C5 Ultra

The Xperia C5 Ultra surfaced online a while ago as Sony Lavender and is a selfie phone with a bezeless display. Sony describes the device as “the all new PROselfie smartphone.” It arrives with a beautiful 6-inch full HD display with IPS, plus Sony’s TV technology Mobile BRAVIA Engine 2 and 1080p resolution.

The big phone lives off an octa-core MediaTek MT6752 processor clocked at 1.7GHz, fitted with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage (with option to add up to 200GB via microSD card slot).

The phablet is outfitted with two cameras, both of 13MP capacity. The frontal camera is enhanced by a 22mm wide-angle lens and front-facing Flash module, which helps fit everything into the frame.

Both smartphones run Android 5.0 Lollipop out of the box and there’s no indication whether Sony will push out the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update for them or not.

Availability and pricing

The Xperia C5 Ultra is available in White, Black and Mint color options, while the M5 will launch in White, Black and Gold. Expect Sony to offer these new smartphones in select countries in mid-August.
