14 DAY TRIAL // Google announced the new Android Wear 2.0 platform earlier this month and the company revealed which smartwatches would be receiving the update. Sony’s SmartWatch 3 wasn’t on the list, but there was some hope that the smartwatch would still get the update.
Sony has recently revealed that its SmartWatch 3 won’t be receiving Android Wear 2.0, as tests showed that the device lacked the processing power to handle the new version. Sony said that its engineers "found the current operating system version delivered the most consistent and stable experience."
After hearing the news that Sony won’t bring Android Wear 2.0 to its smartwatch, many users created a petition to try and convince Sony and Google to make the update available.
2,900 people already signed the petition
The petition is available on change.org, and more than 2,900 Sony SmartWatch 3 users have already signed it; the petition needs a total of 5,000 signatures. It remains to be seen if Sony and Google will take the petition into consideration and make the update available to users.
The petition initiator urges users to “call, email, spam Sony about the issue.” He says that “If they see how much people is talking and blogging about this, probably they would change their mind.”
Android Wear 2.0 brings many improvements, including the addition of Google Assistant, which can be activated by simply holding up the watch and saying “Ok Google.” The update brings users the option to download apps directly to their watches from the on-watch Google Play Store.
Watches that feature cellular connectivity will let users make calls and use apps regardless if the watch is paired with a smartphone. The list of compatible Android Wear 2.0 smartwatches contains Huawei, LG and Motorola devices. LG recently introduced the first smartwatches wth Android Wear 2.0 pre-installed, the LG Watch Sport and Watch Style.
