As expected, Sony Mobile has finally kicked off the rollout of Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update for its Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z3 series.

Last week we reported a new Android 5.1.1 Lollipop firmware was approved by PTCRB and that we were expecting the promised update to go live in the next couple of days.

Then, Sony Japan confirmed that Android 5.1.1 Lollipop would arrive on eligible Xperia smartphones in late July. Well, it looks like the Japanese handset maker has just started the deployment of the last major upgrade before Android M gets released.

However, Android 5.1.1 Lollipop is not yet available for all Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z3 series devices, as Sony previously confirmed.

Instead, only Xperia Z3 Compact and Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact owners can now download and install Android 5.1.1 Lollipop on their devices.

No official changelog is available for the moment

According to XperiaBlog, the new firmware has been released for a couple of devices such as Sony Xperia Z3 Compact (D5803 variant only) and Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact (SGP612 variant only).

Aside from owning these particular two Xperia devices, users will also need to live in the right country in order to get the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update.

For the time being, you can only upgrade if you own the Xperia Z3 Compact and live in the Baltics or Middle East for generic firmware, as well as carrier-branded versions in the Nordics. On the other hand, the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact can only be upgraded to Android 5.1.1 Lollipop in Italy.

We expect Sony to continue to roll out Android 5.1.1 Lollipop to additional devices and countries in the next couple of days, so if you're waiting for the update to arrive in a certain country, for a certain Xperia device, stay tuned for more info on the matter.
