Sony wants to make its mobile custom skin better

A few days ago, word surfaced that Sony was working towards developing a brand-new concept for Android devices under its brand.

Sony Sweden has revealed that the new project is set to start on July 27 and should end on September 13. However, the program is open only to Sony Xperia Z3 customers located in Sweden, so the rest of the world is not included in this experiment for the moment.

This week, Sony has officially introduced the “Concept for Android” in Sweden, and users willing to engage in the trial will be able to test a stripped-down version of Android 5.1 enriched with popular Sony features that have been integrated directly into the OS.

The new version of Android is pretty different from the builds that come installed on current Sony devices. By comparison, “Concept for Android” has been stripped down in order to offer a more “vanilla” look and feel, so it’s more reminiscent of stock Android than anything else.

Only a select few users will be able to test the new concept

For the time being, the new program will be available for 500 Sony Xperia Z3 users in Sweden, who will help the Japanese company make quick changes and improvements to the interface before rolling it out to the public.

Those interested in giving this a try can go ahead and sign up in order to be eligible. Users will be selected on a first come, first served basis, and those who get selected to participate in the project will receive a notification within the upcoming weeks.

If you’re interested, you should keep in mind that all your data, including personal settings from your Xperia Z3 device, will be lost when you start the trial and upon its completion. This means you will need to back up your personal data if you want to participate in the trial without being stripped of your data.

It’s also worth considering that, if you choose to join the trial, you’ll be running pre-release software, which means that you’ll probably stumble upon many bugs and issues on the road. If that doesn’t concern you and you live in Sweden, you’re free to join the new initiative.
