Sony has been trying hard to update some of its high-end smartphones to Android 6.0 Marshmallow, but the Japanese company failed to be among the first to provide this upgrade.

In order to make it easier for its engineers to fine-tune Android 6.0 Marshmallow for its Xperia Z3 family, Sony kicked off a beta program where a limited number of users could test and provide feedback.

It took Sony a few months to build Android 6.0 Marshmallow for Xperia Z3 family, but the first attempt to distribute the update to users failed miserably after many reported issues with Google Play Store, as well as other bugs.

The Japanese company halted the rollout of the update for all Xperia Z3 models due to these problems and recommended those who had already upgraded to factory-reset the phones. Some users found out that using the Sony PC Companion to repair the software was a better option to fix some of the issues in Marshmallow.

Two weeks after pulling the Marshmallow update, Sony has finally resumed the rollout of the upgrade. We’re not sure if the new build is bug-free, but the Japanese company seems to be confident that this time there won’t be any issues.

The update contains the February security patch too

According to XperiaBlog, Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow is now available for Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z3 series. The firmware build number 23.5.A.0.570 can be downloaded on the following smartphones: Xperia Z2 (D6503), Xperia Z3 (D6603), and Xperia Z3 Compact (D5803).

If you own an Xperia Z2, Xperia Z3 or Xperia Z3 Compact, but with another model number, then the update will not show on your smartphone yet.

Aside from the usual new features and improvements included in Android 6.0 Marshmallow, Sony has also added the February security patch, a new Camera 2.0.0 users interface, as well as a new launcher.

The update is available for download via Sony PC Companion software, but it might also arrive OTA (over the air) on eligible smartphones. We expect the handset maker to make Android 6.0 Marshmallow update available to other Xperia models in the next couple of days.
