Some of the changes included have been revealed too

Android 5.1.1 Lollipop is a sure thing for Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z3 series, so the only thing that remains to be confirmed is the exact release date of the update.

We reported last week that a new Android 5.1.1 Lollipop firmware update has been recently certified at PTCRB, which is why we assumed the major update should be available for Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z3 series sometime this month.

And it looks like our assumption was pretty accurate since Sony Japan confirmed Android 5.1.1 Lollipop will be available for the eligible Xperia smartphones in late July, XperiaBlog reports.

Sony Japan also revealed some of the changes included in the update from Android 4.4.4 KitKat to Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. However, since Xperia owners will update from Android 5.0.2 Lollipop to Android 5.1.1, some of the new features and improvements may already be available.

Only two new changes have been confirmed

Still, at least two of the changes that have been previously rumored will be part of the update, so here they are: more options for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth in the notification menu, as well as new icons being used in the Settings menu.

Obviously, these are not the only changes included in Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, so we expect some bug fixes, new animations and under-the-hood improvements to be included too.

Sony is one of the many major handset makers that will bring its most popular smartphones to Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. HTC, Motorola and Samsung already did the same of their high-end devices, but many other companies have yet to offer the update.

However, for many smartphones launched two years ago, this could be the last major update they receive. Google is expected to launch Android M this fall and many companies will want to push the update as soon as possible, though few will be able to upgrade their smartphones until early next year.

Even if it hasn't be confirmed yet, Sony Xperia Z3+ should be among the first smartphones to receive the Android M update, but it remains to be seen when exactly it will happen.
