Sony announced a number of Xperia smartphones during this year’s MWC event in Barcelona, but one of the most exciting gadgets is the Xperia Touch projector. The device was first showcased during last year’s MWC, but a release date and official name were confirmed only this year.

Sony’s Xperia Touch is a smart speaker, project and virtual Android tablet all wrapped in a compact and easy-to-use design. The projector has the capacity to turn any flat surface into a 23-inch HD touchscreen, with either horizontal or vertical projection.

The interface is responsive to physical touch and the device comes with a combination of infrared light and real-time detection via its built-in camera, at a rate of 60 frames-per-second. It allows users to play games, watch online videos, and reply to messages in apps and social networks.

Compatible with PlayStation 4 Remote Play and runs Android

Sony says that the device was designed with minimalism and accessibility in mind, while offering useful information to users, like real-time weather information, video notes, calendar access and even Skype for video chat.

Xperia Touch is compatible with PlayStation 4 Remote Play and runs any app or game from the Google Play Store. It comes with a resolution of 1,366 x 768 pixels and weighs in at 932 grams, while its measurements reach 69 x 134 x 143mm. The projector has a 13MP camera and two-way speaker, runs 7.0 Nougat, has 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. It will roll out to Europe in selected countries with a retail price of €1499, more expensive than the Moto Z with projector Mod.

Sony also showcased its Xperia Ear wireless headphones, which come with new audio technology and Sony Agent Technology, “a personal assistant that uses conversational voice interaction and head gestures to help you get things done, access information and communicate.” Sony is also working on a new voice-chat service to pair with Xperia Ear, which would allow users to start a group conversation in real time with a single button press or head movement.
