14 DAY TRIAL // The fresh and interesting Sony XZ2 and XZ2 Compact have been unveiled, and they are by far best-looking devices launched by the company.
Sony might not have had great success with their high-end devices, and there are various reasons for that. The design of the phones is definitely not one of the reasons, and we know that because Sony always managed to stand out from the crowd with their unique approach.
We now live in a world where devices from rival companies look pretty much the same unless you’re holding them. Sony somehow managed to keep away from the standard design, and they are doing their own thing. It worked until now, and we can only hope that they will manage to keep this uniqueness.
Sony XZ2 and XZ2 Compact are beautiful
Since many of the latest high-end devices are sharing the same platform, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845, Sony is using it as well. Both phones come with 4GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage, but that shouldn’t surprise anyone.
On the other hand, Sony is pretty much done with the headphone jack, and it’s using USB 3.0 Type-C. Since there was no real expectation from Sony, ditching the headphone jack is not really considered a betrayal.
Also, both devices feature a 19MP front camera that can shoot in 4K, and slow motion at 960 FPS, at 1080p resolution. The most significant difference between the two is the display, of course. The regular Sony XZ2 has 1440p display (5.7 inches), and the Compact version comes with a 1080p display (5 inches).
Of course, the front panel is Gorilla Glass 5, and the high-end model even features a slightly curved glass back, which also happens to allow for wireless charging. We should also mention that both of them comes with Android 8.0, although it's not the stock version.
They will be available sometime in May, in a variety of colors. There is no word on pricing, but we wouldn’t be surprised if the high-end model hits the $1000 ceiling.
