“Something went wrong,” the error message reads

Windows 10 comes with a completely overhauled Mail app, but just like many other universal apps included in the new OS, it fails to work properly on some computers and a number of users cannot add their Gmail or Outlook.com accounts.

Trying to do it fails with an error that reads “Something went wrong” and a code that could be one of the following (but not limited to these, though): 0x8007042b, 0x80040154, 0x8000ffff, 0x8007000d, 0x80c8043e, 0x80070435, 0x8007006d, and 0x80070425.

Microsoft confirmed the problem in a post on Community forums and explained that a patch is expected in a future update. Yet, a workaround exists.

“We are aware of this issue and will address it in a future release. For now, use this work around to setup your account using an alternate connect type,” the company said.

Use Gmail with IMAP and Outlook with Exchange

The issue occurs when trying to set up your account with the default Google and Outlook settings offered by the Mail app, so you have to manually input your settings for each service.

If you choose Gmail, for example, you need to configure it to use IMAP and in the incoming server field your need to input:

imap.gmail.com:993

The outgoing email server must be:

smtp.gmail.com:465

Choose IMAP4 for the account type and you are ready to go. Alternatively, have a look at the screenshot included in the article to make sure that your settings look just like these.

For Outlook, everything’s easier. Simply select Exchange when setting up your account in the Mail app, enter your outlook.com username and password, and you’re good to go.

The Mail app should automatically detect your settings and the account should get automatically configured.

Keep in mind that Microsoft’s also working on a patch to address this problem, so we’ll update the article when it becomes available.
