The Windows 10 Creators Update is now rolling out to users across the world, with the process taking place in stages, but it appears that a number of devices are hitting an unexpected bug after installing it.

Microsoft has confirmed that three different Dell models encounter a problem that prevents them from booting to the desktop after installing the Creators Update and trying to wake from sleep.

The models in question are the Alienware 17 R4, the Precision M7710, and the Precision M6800, according to Microsoft, though some other laptops might be impacted as well.

Update drivers to latest version

The software giant says that a forced reboot is needed to return to a working state, but the bug will be experienced again when trying to wake from sleep at a later time.

“After installing the Windows 10 Creators Update, the following Dell models may wake to a black screen after closing and opening the lid. It requires a hard reboot to restore the display. This problem then reoccurs the next time the lid is closed and re-opened,” the company explains.

In a follow-up message, a Microsoft engineer confirms that this is a problem with the GeForce display driver installed on these laptops, and users are strongly recommended to download and install the latest drivers that have already been tested on the Creators Update.

Furthermore, the new driver version is shipped through Windows Update to these devices, so once you bring the laptop fully up to date, it should wake from sleep correctly with no black screen whatsoever.

To get the latest updates and driver version on Windows 10 Creators Update, users need to launch the Settings app and head over to Update & security > Windows Update > Check for updates. If the new NVIDIA driver version doesn’t show up in Windows Update, you can download the latest version of the GeForce drivers from Softpedia using this link.
