14 DAY TRIAL // Josh Strobl from the Solus Project has just published the eighteenth installation of the weekly "This Week in Solus" newsletter, informing users about the latest updates and news on the GNU/Linux distribution.
According to Josh Strobl, Solus Project has received a new server machine powered by an Intel Xeon E3 (8-core) processor and 32GB of RAM, and boasting a 2TB (RAID1) hard disk drive, where the distribution's software repositories will be hosted. What this means for Solus Linux users is that they will be able to get faster downloads when installing or updating software in the OS.
"We’re currently moving the repository to a new server with significantly more disk space and resources, as well as to a location that should improve the main repository speeds," said Josh Strobl in today's announcement. "This has been the result of generous donations from our Patreon and PayPal supporters. Thanks to them, we’re able to worry less about disk space while everyone else can enjoy faster package downloads."
Solus 1.0 gets the latest software updates, user guide improvements
As reported last week, the Solus Project announced the release of a comprehensive user guide that promises to teach newcomers how to install the distribution, how to use the Budgie desktop environment, how to do basic system administration tasks, as well as various common and advanced operations. Well, today, the Solus User Guide has been converted entirely to Markdown, and users are invited to translate it in any language they want.
Lastly, Solus 1.0 gets the latest software updates, among which we can mention Atom 1.4.0, BleachBit 1.10, Blender 2.76b, Darktable 2.0.0, FFmpeg 2.8.5, Erlang 18.2.2, Lollypop 0.9.77, Mosh 1.2.5, Node.js 5.4.1, Portmidi 217, Scribus 1.4.6, TOR 0.2.7.6, youtube-dl 2016.01.14, and cve-check-tool 5.6.
