It's been a great week for users of the unique and independent Solus operating system, and while you're waiting impatiently for the Solus 1.2.1 release, we'd like to tell you a little bit about what landed in Solus during the past week.

It looks like the Solus devs have been quite busy lately adding a bunch of goodies for your enjoyment, starting with Linux kernel 4.8.2, full disk encryption, which will be available in the Solus 1.2.1 installer, OpenGL 4.5 support for Intel Broadwell, promising boost in gaming performance, and continuing with the latest Nvidia 370.28 graphics drivers, along with the 32-bit ones, and the ability to install the Yarn Package Manager.

Moreover, Solus repos received latest PHP support so you can run Symfony Framework, the LightDM display manager was made stateless, which means that there's no /etc/lightdm configuration file anymore by default, a "Restart Now" button has been added to the Solus Installer in Solus 1.2.1, and a new version of Software Center landed with more third-party apps, desktop notifications for upgrades, and more.

Lastly, the mouse cursor glitch in Mozilla Firefox was finally patched, and it looks like a lot of work was put into improving the Budgie desktop environment, which received a bunch of nice tweaks, such as full IBus support, a cute new Budgie icon contributed by the Ubuntu Budgie Remix (budgie-remix) team, and some other things that remain a secret until the day Solus 1.2.1 is released.

First official Solus MATE Edition coming very soon

Apart from the goodies mentioned above, which already landed in the repositories of the distribution, the hard working Solus development team was preparing the first ever Solus MATE Edition, which should hit the streets very soon as part of the Solus 1.2.1 release. If you can't wait for the final release, you can install the MATE 1.16 desktop environment right now from the repos.

You can call it Soulmate or whatever you want, but the Solus MATE Edition is coming along nicely, and Solus patrons and supporters were able to get an early taste the other day and enjoy a beautifully designed and fast MATE 1.16 Desktop experience, along with all the powerful tweaks Solus is offering, and the latest software releases, of course. Take a look!
