Solus Project's Joshua Strobl published earlier today the 45th install of their This Week in Solus (TWiS) newsletter, informing users of the Solus operating system about the latest developments within the project.

First and foremost, the developer talks about the release of Brisk Menu 0.4.0 application menu that's used by default in the Solus MATE edition, as well as in other supported GNU/Linux distributions. We have a separate article with the changes implemented in Brisk Menu 0.4.0 if you're curious to know what's new.

Then, there are some good news for those who run Solus on computers with Nvidia GPUs, specifically Pascal cards like the Nvidia GTX 10xx series, as the proprietary Nvidia driver was updated to the short-lived branch, which is at version 381.22 at the moment of writing, enabling SteamVR support and other improvements.

Under the hood, Solus is now powered by the Linux 4.9.29 LTS kernel, and lots of packages have been updated to their latest versions. Additionally, the MariaDB 10.1.23 open-source database server landed in Solus and can be installed from the stable repositories as we speak.

Software Center UX improvements and new features

The star of this week's TWiS newsletter appears to be the Software Center graphical package manager, which was updated recently to version 18, a major milestone revamping both the UX and UI with the implementation of screenshot support to the new package view page and better AppStream integration.

"The search functionality was also improved in v18. For instance, in situations where you may use spaces in a search query, such as 'gnome multi writer', we now find the package name, replacing the space behind the scenes with either an underscore or hyphen. We also filter out dbginfo sub-packages where possible," said Joshua Strobl, Solus Project Communications Manager.

Other than that, Software Center now features a new keyboard shortcut (Ctrl + F) to quickly access the Search page, and lets users navigate back in the package manager using the mouse back button if you have one. Improvements were also brought to the app icons and the way apps that contain new components are organized, such as the dedicated office.finance section.
