Yet another app waving goodbye to Windows phones

Another day, another developer leaving Windows phones. This time, it’s SofaScore, which is one of the most popular apps for live scores for a wide variety of sports from pretty much every country out there.

SofaScore has long been one of the companies providing Windows phone users with an app to get these live scores on their handsets, but it turns out that the developing team decided to give up on the app for a good reason: the dropping market share.

Windows Phone/Windows 10 Mobile is currently at 0.3 percent market share, according to analyst firm Gartner, and more declines are expected in the coming years, so there’s very little that could convince developers to stick with the platform. As a result, users are leaving too, so it’s all going downhill for Microsoft’s mobile operating system.

No sign of progress

SofaScore says in its statement on the demise of the Windows Phone client that it decided to abandon the app because Windows Phone “lacks any sign of progress,” clearly showing that Microsoft’s dropping interest in convincing developers to stick with the platform is hurting its future.

“Unfortunately SofaScore decided not to release any future updates for these platforms as they have been in decline for some time now. With numbers of devices and users in constant fall, the market for these platforms lack any sign of progress that would also allow SofaScore to improve further,” the company said.

“In practice, this means that the latest SofaScore update (version 4.1.5.0) is the final as there are no current plans for the next update.”

While SofaScore will no longer have an app to let users get their live scores, the website will continue to be available, so you can turn to Microsoft Edge to get the same info. Of course, you won’t have any notifications for your favorite matches, teams, or leagues, but at least you’ll be able to see scores in real time.
