14 DAY TRIAL // Ubuntu app developer Keshav Bhatt informs Softpedia today, September 15, 2016, about the release of the Beta version of his up and coming graphical user interface (GUI) for Canonical's Snapcraft tool for creating Snap universal binary packages.
This being the first time we write here something about Snapcraft GUI, we think you should first know a little more about the app. First of all, its development cycle started not too long ago, and the first public beta version was made available for early adopters about a week ago, tagged as version 1.0 Beta on the project's GitHub page.
The application uses a sleek dark theme by default, it's written in C++ and Qt (yes, no GTK+ version at the moment), and it includes quite a lot of features, such as the ability to search the Snappy store for Snaps and install them, the ability to load an example Snap for newcomers, and support for plugins, and many more.
Snapcraft GUI 2.0 coming soon
Snapcraft GUI 2.0 Beta has been published earlier today, and it adds a new syntax highlighter, the ability to check for updated versions during startup, support for saving and loading Editor settings, as well as the implementation of the example snapcraft.yaml we told you about above.
Maybe it's not much right now, or maybe it is, but Snapcraft GUI 2.0 is coming along nicely, and it's currently the only graphical user interface for the Snapcraft command-line created by Canonical for Ubuntu Linux operating systems to allow developers to package their applications as Snaps.
What's a Snap? It's the universal package that lets app developers distribute their applications across multiple operating systems using a single binary format. However, Snapcraft GUI 2.0 Beta is now available for download as a .deb package for 64-bit Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) systems, and we hope that we'll be able to install it as a Snap as well when the final release hits the streets later in the year.
