Snapchat is the social network that seems to set the trends in the market, especially since it launched Stories back in October 2013. Just a few days after Facebook announced its own Stories section, one that’s strikingly similar to Snapchat’s, Snap announced an update to its app to allow users to search across stories.

The update is currently rolling out across cities, providing users a new way to “understand what’s happening in Snaps that are submitted to Our Story, and to create new Stories using advanced machine learning.” Snap says that over 1 million unique Stories can be searched on Snapchat, offering users plenty of content to check out.

Users can search for Stories based on keywords, like games, concerts, parties, tutorials, and many more. Before Snapchat introduced this new feature, users could only see stories shared by their friends or those that were posted directly by Snap.

The new feature could use image recognition and geotagging

The new tool will help users check out stories posted by others on Snapchat, but only those that were previously shared publicly and are relevant to the topic. Snapchat didn’t reveal how the feature actually works, but it’s possible that it makes use of image recognition technology, geotagging and text on stories to identify the location and time a story was taken.

“The best part of Stories is seeing the world through the eyes of our community. It’s easy to add your point of view - simply take a Snap and add it to Our Story! You might see it included in relevant Stories depending on what you’re Snapping,” Snapchat said.

The feature would prove useful for many Snapchat users, while it ensures that they spend more time inside the app and check out more content. Recently, Snapchat introduced a new design, one that was made available on both Android and iOS versions of the app.
