After more than two years of absence from the Linux scene, Slax developer Tomas Matejicek announced today the release of a new version of his once very popular GNU/Linux distribution.

Slax 9.2.1 is now available for download as the latest stable release of the Linux distro, and it's the first to be based on Debian GNU/Linux. That's right, Slax no longer lives up to its name and drops Slackware for Debian. As its version number suggests, Slax 9.2.1 is based on Debian GNU/Linux 9.2.1 "Stretch."

"After several years of inactivity Slax project has been brought to life again in new version 9.2.1," said the developer in today's release announcement. "I've decided to go for Debian because it made my life much easier and I believe that it will make yours too."

Still your pocket operating system

Slax is keeping its Slackware-derivative name despite being based on Debian, and it also keeps its moto as "your pocket operating system." The OS remains small in size, as Slax 9.2.1 has around 220MB for the 64-bit live ISO image. This release is also available for 32-bit and iPXE systems.

Featuring the lightweight Fluxbox window manager, Slax 9.2.1 comes with only a minimal selection of apps, including the xLunch application launcher designed specifically for Slax. Chromium is used as default web browser, and you can also find the Leafpad text editor, a terminal emulator, and a calculator app.

Under the hood, Slax 9.2.1 is powered by the long-term supported Linux 4.9 kernel, the same that Debian Stretch uses. You can download Slax 9.2.1 right now through our web portal if you want to give it a try.
