After informing us of the release of his CruxEX 3.3 2017 GNU/Linux distribution, developer Arne Exton recently brought to our attention that his SlackEX distro got a new important update.

Based on the latest stable Slackware 14.2 operating system, SlackEX Build 170831 is out to replace the 4.10.2-x86_64-exton kernel used in previous releases with the more recent 4.12.9-x86_64-exton kernel, which was patched by Arne Exton with support for modern hardware components and everything else you might need.

"My remaster of Slackware Current (14.2), which I call SlackEX 14.2/Current 64-bit Linux Live DVD, is just as easy to use as Ubuntu and/or Linux Mint," said Arne Exton in the release notes. "Some tend to complain that the program management in Slackware is awkward. That was perhaps earlier the case, but not anymore."

The KDE desktop environment is upgraded to version 4.14.35

SlackEX is built around the KDE desktop environment, and the latest release upgrades the KDE components to KDE Development Platform 4.14.35 LTS, which was introduced along with the KDE Applications 17.08 software suite series. Other updated components include Gparted 0.29.0, VirtualBox 5.1.26, and Google Chrome 60.0.3112.

In addition, users will find pre-installed the GIMP 2.8.10 image editor and viewer, the GSlapt 0.5.4b and Slackpkg 2.82.1 graphical package managers (slapt-get GTK+ GUIs), Mozilla Firefox 55.0.3 web browser, Mozilla Thunderbird 52.3.0 email and news client, as well as Samba 4.6.7 and GCC (GNU Compiler Collection) 7.2.0. Also, GRUB2 is now the default bootloader for SlackEX.

Other than that, it looks like the Wicd network connection manager was replaced with NetworkManager. You can study the full list of installed packages if you're curious to know what's included in the SlackEX 14.2/Current 64 bit Linux Live DVD Build 170831, which you can download right now from our website as a live, 64-bit ISO image.
