Arne Exton informs us about the immediate availability for download of a new build of his Slackware-based SlackEX GNU/Linux operating system, version 160817, running the latest stable Linux kernel.

SlackEX is currently based on the Slackware 14.2 operating system, but Arne Exton is always bringing you the latest GNU/Linux technologies and software releases. As such, SlackEX Build 160817 is the first of its kind to run the latest and recently released Linux 4.7.1 kernel, along with the Nvidia 367.35 proprietary graphics driver for Nvidia GPUs.

"I’ve upgraded all included Slackware 14.2 packages to the latest version by 160817. The kernel has been changed to version 4.7.1 released 160816," says Arne Exton in the release announcement. "VirtualBox (not in Slackware’s repositories) has been upgraded to version 5.1.4 and Nvidia’s proprietary Graphics driver to version 367.35."

Now based on the Slackware Current repositories

Of course, the most important change added in the SlackEX Build 160817 release is the replacement of the Slackware 14.1 repositories with those from Slackware Current so that you can always get the newest security and software updates. But Arne Exton continues to add applications that aren't available in the Slackware repos.

For example, SlackEX Build 160817 features the Google Chrome 46.0.2490.86 web browser, VirtualBox 5.1.4 virtualization software, Gparted 0.24.0 partition editor, GIMP 2.8.10, which was installed from sources, and many more. Other updated apps include Mozilla Firefox 48.0.1, Mozilla Thunderbird 45.2.0, Samba 4.4.5, and GCC 5.4.0.

SlackEX's default desktop environment is KDE 4.14.21, and it looks like Arne Exton has added GRUB2 as default bootloader, which will be enabled after installing the OS on your hard disk drive, the NetwokManager network connection manager as a replacement for Wicd, and other minor improvements.
