Money would have footed the bill, sent her on a honeymoon

On June 17, Dylan Roof went into the Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina, and murdered 9 people. Some days later, on June 21, his sister, Amber Roof, would have walked down the aisle with fiancé Michael Tyo.

Roof is now in police custody. His sister, in what could best be described as a moment of not thinking things through, took to GoFundMe to ask for donations to pay for the wedding that she had to cancel and for her and her new husband’s honeymoon.

As expected, the backlash was immediate, and as of right now, the campaign has been pulled. People Magazine confirms it was up online and that it was really set up by Roof’s sister.

The media ruined the wedding

Roof’s actions are said to have been racially motivated and the cruelty with which he carried out his plan is revealed by new details that emerge on a regular basis.

In the description of the now-defunct crowfunding campaign, his sister makes it sound as if she’s blaming the media for having to cancel the wedding. She admits, though, that the main reason was the “actions of one man,” but she stops short of describing them one way or another.

You can see the full description below.

“Our wedding day was suppose[d] to be the most important and special day of our lives. It was suppose[d] to start our lives together with our new family,” she writes. “The Charleston Massacre took place and our lives were forever changed. The media abused our privacy and published all of our wedding information and destroyed our dream day. Destroying the first day of Michael and my life together.”

Amber wants another chance

She continues to say that most of the people they had invited at the wedding still came down after the shooting, to offer support to the family. They would not be asked to do that again for the wedding when it takes place, mostly because expenses have already been incurred.

Hence, the crowfunding campaign. As Amber explains, the money raised would have helped her pay the bills for the canceled wedding and other unspecified bills, and would have sent her on her “dream honeymoon.”

In an attempt to not appear heartless, she also pledged 10% of the money to the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, for the victims’ families.

At the time the campaign was pulled, she had raised $1,500 (€1,351) of the $5,000 (€4,506) she said she needed, but criticism was so harsh that she and her future husband probably understood how callous it was for them to ask money to go on a honeymoon when 9 people had lost their lives.
