Stefan Lippers-Hollmann, on behalf of the sidux team, announced the release of sidux 2009-01 (Ουρανός), a Debian Unstable (sid)-based Linux Live CD. Featuring the first release candidate of Linux kernel 2.6.28.6, sidux 2009-01 can be used with KDE, KDE-lite or the lightweight XFCE desktop environments, on both 32 and 64-bit platforms. sidux, intended for hard disk installations, provides an efficient upgrade path and extra hardware and software support. sidux 2009-01 mainly focuses on implementing the changes in version 2.6.29 of the Linux kernel, ensuring integration for the innserv init optimizations and improving the install process, especially on USB devices.

"Kernel 2.6.28 doesn't only improve and stabilise hardware support for newer devices, it also adapts the I/O scheduler support for SSDs in order to improve prioritisation of disk accesses and to speed these up. Another major accomplishment is the deployment of the opensource OpenFWWF firmware for Broadcom wireless devices, which now supports BCM4306, BCM4311/1, BCM4318 and BCM4320 devices on default and makes installation of proprietary components through b43-fwcutter optional. Since "Πόντος", sidux is using "insserv" to reorder and optimise the sysv initscripts used during the system boot, this doesn't only improve the boot times, but also allows easier de-/ activating of particular initscripts using standard tools. Further efforts have gone into improving this setup and to fix a few minor bugs in regards to it.", said Stefan Lippers-Hollmann in the official release announcement.
