The Last of Us was one of the most important titles that Sony launched for the PlayStation 3 before it shifted focus to its new hardware and even Shuhei Yoshida is eager to see how the development team at Naughty Dog would approach the creation of a sequel.

The leader of the Sony Worldwide Studios is telling Eurogamer that, "We haven’t confirmed The Last of Us 2, but ever since the launch of the first game, people like are talking about some ideas for a potential sequel, some experiments that they want to do."

Yoshida is interested in seeing how the characters cope with the situation created by the ending of the original The Last of Us and is also interested in seeing how the development team at Naughty Dog would improve the game on the PlayStation 4.

Neil Druckmann, the director who worked on the first title, previously explained that his team is testing out a number of ideas and that it might deliver a full announcement when more work was completed on the title.

At the moment Naughty Dog is focused on the development of Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, which is set to be launched on March 18 of next year and will deliver the final chapter in the adventures of Nathan Drake.

The Last of Us 2 might introduce new characters

Naughty Dog is well known for its ability to create complex stories and to deliver characters that gamers can create solid connections with.

Druckmann has suggested that a sequel for The Last of Us might introduce some new faces rather than focus once again on Joel and Ellie.

Uncharted 4: A Thief's End is a complex game experience, the first in the franchise to arrive on the PlayStation 4, and it will probably require all the attention of the Naughty Dog team for the coming months.

Given that the title will also receive downloadable content and post-launch support, it is very possible that actual work on The Last of Us 2 will not actually begin until summer of next year.

This means that an official announcement and an initial trailer might be first introduced at E3 or Gamescom next year, with launch possibly coming in late 2017 or early 2018.
