Selena Gomez doesn’t talk that much about her most famous ex, Justin Bieber, but seeing how she promised that her latest album would be her most personal yet, she’s also becoming more candid with the press. Her interview with The Sunday Times speaks volumes for that.

Selena and Justin started dating in 2010 and stayed strong until 2013. However, it would be another year before they broke up for good, and that final year, 2014, proved to be the hardest for Selena, as cheating reports abounded.

She would be very happy if we could stop making the association between her and Justin almost automatically, she tells the publication.

Falling in love is not a mistake, but going public could be

The problem with the Justin Bieber relationship, Selena says, wasn’t that she met someone and fell in love with him, but rather that their romance played out in the media because they were such big celebrities.

And make no mistake, during their time together, these 2 were big news. They even got their own couple name from the fans, Jelena, and they would be in the news daily. Just to give you an idea of how major this is, know that the mere confirmation that they were dating was met with outrage online: Justin lost thousands of Twitter fans, and Selena got even more death threats on social media.

She doesn’t regret being with Justin, but she wishes the association between them 2 would go away already.

“I didn’t think I was doing anything bad by falling in love,” she says. “There’s such an emphasis on people being the perfect thing and then destroying them because it’s good press.[…] Sometimes you have to lie to yourself to get through the criticism, and then you’re in your closet crying. It’s been like that for me a couple of times, but I only want to learn from those things.”

Selena had a purity ring, ditched it for Bieber

Another thing that Selena speaks candidly about is the fact that she asked her father to get her a purity ring when she was 13 years old. A purity ring is also known as a promise, abstinence or chastity ring, and is worn by people who promise to stay abstinent until marriage.

She admits she took it off for Justin and says that she’s not “embarrassed to say that.” As she puts it, she would have liked to be able to keep the promise she made when she was 13, but she found out that abstinence isn’t for everybody.
