Google announced a few months ago its new Photos service for all mobile users. The new service allows Android, iOS users to store all their photos and videos regardless of their resolution.

“In May, we launched Google Photos as the home for all your photos and videos. With Google Photos you can store unlimited high quality photos and videos for free, find photos fast, and see them organized by what matters to you.

“Plus, you can bring moments to life and share anywhere with anyone,” said Google in a blog post.

In an attempt to streamline the photo experience it can deliver, Google announced that beginning August 1 it would start to shut down Google+ Photos, first on Android, and soon thereafter on the Web and iOS platform.

Those who are still using Google+ Photos are strongly advised to make the switch to the new Google Photos service that's already available for Android and iOS users since May.

In fact, if you already own an Android smartphone, then you might have seen a prompt in Google+ Photos on Android with a link to download the new Google Photos.

Now would be a good time to upgrade to Google Photos

Keep in mind that all photos and videos will still be saved and available after you switch to the new, stand-alone Google Photos application, so there's no need for backup.

According to Google, with the new Photos application users will still be able to backup, edit, and share their photos and videos, with unlimited storage, automatic organization, and more.

It's also worth mentioning that Google confirmed that those who don't want to switch or update to the new Google Photos service will not be able to use Google+ Photos on Android since the app will soon stop working.

The good news is all your photos and videos will still remain safely stored and available via http://photos.google.com or for export using Google Takeout.

You can now download Google Photos for Android for free via Google Play Store. The application should be fully compatible with all devices powered by Android 4.0 and up.
