14 DAY TRIAL // If you’re asking SanDisk, size does matter, and because of this, the company is trying to create a mix that takes many by surprise: the biggest storage capacity fitted in the smallest flash drive.
At this year’s edition of the CES show in Las Vegas, SanDisk announced an all-new USB Type-C flash drive that’s designed to hold up to 1TB of data.
Right now, the record holder for the biggest (in terms of storage) flash drive is Kingston, whose own device has already reached 2TB, but as far as the biggest-storage-in-the-smallest-drive mix goes, SanDisk is the king of the castle with 1TB in just a tiny pen drive.
The company hasn’t provided any specifications like read and write speeds, but it said at CES that this is just a prototype, so more information will probably be shared at a later time when the company picks a launch date. Of course, don’t expect it to be cheap, but carrying so much space in your pocket is for many worth every cent.
Smallest 256GB USB drive
And because SanDisk now pushes for the smaller, the better approach, the company also unveiled the world’s smallest 256GB USB 3.1 flash drive. This particular model is included in the already-available SanDisk Ultra Fit USB 3.1 series and will go on sale later this year, with availability details to also be unveiled close to the release date.
SanDisk offered some figures to provide us with a glimpse into how many files can fit on such a large drive, saying there’s enough storage for 14,000 photos, 10 hours of full HD video, 16,000 songs, and 64GB available for other files.
Judging from the specs of the other flash drives already up for grabs as part of the same series, it should offer maximum read speeds of 130 MB/s. SanDisk says the 256GB drive will cost $149.99, only $30 more than the 128GB version that was announced earlier.
