The Society for Information Display will be hosting its annual event in Los Angeles from May 23 until May 25. During the event, Samsung’s Display division is said to showcase the world’s first stretchable display.

Samsung says that the stretchable OLED display is unique and has the capacity to bend in both directions, while it’s also different from existing flexible displays, since they can bend in only one direction, according to local reports.

Moreover, industry experts say that the stretchable display requires a more complicated technology compared to existing displays on the market, and it’s considered the top product in the market of flexible technology.

The OLED display can stretch as much as 12 millimeters

The South Korean company revealed that the display can stretch as much as 12 millimeters when pressure is applied and it has the capacity to keep its high degree of resolution, without affecting the quality of displayed content.

Samsung will present a 9.1-inch version of the stretchable OLED display during the SID event in Los Angeles, while LG Display and other companies are also expected to showcase new screens that they’ve been working on and that could be featured in future products, including smartphones.

It’s worth noting that Samsung is only going to showcase the new display, and it remains to be seen when it will reach mass production. But one thing remains clear, the stretchable OLED display can be used in a plenitude of products, including smartphones.

Still, until the first Samsung smartphone with flexible display arrives, the company is expected to announce the foldable Galaxy X device, which might take a while to develop. Last month, an executive from Samsung Display stated that foldable smartphones might not hit shelves until 2019, because engineers are still working on perfecting the technology.

In addition, Samsung’s representative has stated that the demand for bezel-less smartphones is still high, while the Galaxy X with foldable display might be launched when demand goes down.
