The Galaxy S8 could be Samsung's first bezel-less handset

Many handset makers are considering switching to OLED flexible displays next year, and Apple is one of the biggest companies that seem to have already made that decision. However, Samsung is the first major company that has just confirmed it will launch smartphones with flexible OLED displays next year.

Moreover, these phones will feature an incredible 90% screen-to-body ratio, something that Xiaomi managed with the newly announced Mi Mix, which features a mind-blowing 91.3% screen-to-body ratio.

According to a new report, the Chief Engineer of S-LCD, a company that's owned by both Samsung and Sony, has confirmed Samsung will certainly launch next year smartphones that will have more than 90% screen-to-body ratio.

Park Wonsang went on to say that Samsung won't stop here and will try to increase the screen-to-body ratio to 99% in the next couple of years. Basically, this means that future Samsung high-end smartphones could have OLED flexible displays that cover the entire front side.

Other companies might follow Samsung's example

If you're thinking that the Galaxy S8 could be the first device to feature such a display, you might want to set your expectations lower. Wonsang did not make any comments regarding the Galaxy S8, so it's unlikely that Samsung will operate any drastic changes design-wise.

Since Apple seems to be determined to add an OLED flexible display to its next-generation iPhone, it would make sense for other handset makers to implement a similar technology to their products if they want to remain competitive.

Anyway, it's nice to know what we can expect from the smartphone industry in the next couple of years.

Even though true innovation comes in small bottles these days, it's a rather nice feeling to know that companies are trying to come up with something new every time they launch a major product. It looks like 2017 will be a crazy year for the smartphone industry, wouldn't you agree?
