Leaked specs point to big changes coming to the Galaxy S9

With the iPhone X almost here, it’s now Samsung’s turn to make the headlines with future models, and naturally, the Galaxy S9 plays a key role this time.

A new bunch of rumors coming from China suggests that the Samsung Galaxy S9 will undergo a series of major changes, including several “borrowed” from rival Apple.

One of them is the removal of the headphone jack. First taking place on the iPhone 7 a year ago, ditching the 3.5mm audio connector was considered a decision that most manufacturers wouldn’t adopt, though new phone generations seem to contradict this. HTC already abandoned the headphone jack, Google did the same on the Pixel 2, and now Samsung could do it on upcoming Galaxy S9 as well.

Alleged specs of the Galaxy S9, though it’s worth emphasizing it’s too early to consider them entirely accurate, suggest that a more advanced facial recognition system is also likely, probably based on 3D sensing tech similar to the one on the iPhone X.

Samsung’s flagship models already offer facial recognition, but it turns out that the Galaxy S9 will embrace 3D sensors just like Apple, as changes concerning the fingerprint sensors are also on the table.

Fingerprint sensor embedded into the screen?

It turns out that Samsung is now experimenting with a design that has the fingerprint sensor integrated into the screen, but according to these leaked specs, the company “is still testing reliability and could be moved to the back of the phone again.”

The same back of the phone is likely to come with dual-camera system on the back, again similar to Apple’s, certainly with a telephoto lens whose specs aren’t yet available. Dual-lens cameras are also expected to be used on the front of the phone, the specs claim.

It remains to be seen how much of this report is true, as it’s one of the first extensive leaks pointing to the specs of the new Galaxy S9, but some of the changes do make sense, including the addition of 3D facial recognition. More will be unveiled for sure in the coming months ahead of the early 2018 unveiling.
