SmartThings update will also be delivered to Windows phones

Windows phone users have kind of gotten used to app developers leaving the platform, and whenever significant updates are released, Android and iOS are pretty much the key focus for the majority of companies.

But as far as Samsung is concerned, and we probably all agree that the South Korean company has all the reasons in the world to be more focused on Android than on Windows Phone, app updates should arrive on all platforms, including Microsoft’s.

That’s why the company will release a significant security update for its SmartThings home automation app on all supported platforms and Windows Phone won’t be left behind.

“The safety and security of your home are fundamental to our mission at SmartThings. Starting September 15, 2016, the latest versions of the SmartThings mobile app will begin using new authentication measures to help keep your home private and secure,” the company said.

New version coming soon to Windows phones

SmartThings 2.2.0 for iOS and Android and version 1.6.2 for Windows Phone (which is not yet available, but will launch soon, Samsung promises) are the ones that include the security updates, and the firm says that everyone must update by December 6.

On that day, all users will be automatically logged out from the app, and they will be unable to log back in until an update to the latest version is performed.

“Please note that if your phone is incompatible with SmartThings (Android OS less than 4.0 or iOS 8.1 or prior), you will be unable to receive this update. As of December 6, 2016, incompatible phones will no longer support the mobile app, and you will be unable to log in,” Samsung says.

So there you go, here’s one example that Windows Phone doesn’t necessarily have to be left behind when new app updates are released, and devs should really follow Samsung’s example and continue investing in the platform. Despite Microsoft’s reticence, that is.
