Samsung sells more Z1 units than Galaxy S6-es

Samsung announced its Galaxy S6 flagship with bells and whistles during a media event held at MWC 2015 in Barcelona in early March. Following the launch, the Korean tech giant proceeded to heavily market the phone, so you’d think the Galaxy S6 is selling like crazy all around the world.

In some markets this might as well be the case, but in emergent ones like India, premium devices like the Galaxy S6 aren’t really all that popular among the mainstream population.

Remember that, not long ago, Samsung unveiled its first Tizen smartphone effort in the form of a handset called the Z1. Well, even if the device arrives with pretty unimpressive specs, a new report coming out from Counterpoint Research claims that the Z1 is actually selling much better than the Galaxy S6 in India (as spotted at Tizen Indonesia).

The thing is Tizen is still a very limited platform due to the lack of native apps (although you can use Android apps provided the OpenMobile Application Compatibility Layer is installed from the Tizen app store), so a lot of people might have second doubts with jumping on board with an infant mobile OS such as this. But the under $100 / €78 price tag makes a compelling case for the phone.

Indian consumers prefer the Samsung Z1

The phone arrives with a 4.0-inch display with 480 x 800 pixel resolution and is fueled by a dual-core Spreadtrum SC7727S processor fitted with 768MB of RAM and 4GB of internal storage (expandable up to 64GB via microSD card slot).

Anyway, according to the figures in the report, Samsung has scored a 24.5% smartphone shipment share in India during the second quarter of the year, which constitutes a decrease of 3.3% from Q1 2015, when the Korean tech giant had 27.8%.

Even so, the company continues to remain the leader in the country while smartphone shipments are concerned.

It is argued that part of Samsung’s success can be owed to the fact that the Korean behemoth has started manufacturing devices in the region, which includes the Z1.

Samsung is also rumored to be working on the Z3, its next-gen Tizen smartphone, which is expected to arrive with better specs, including a 720p display.
