Just days after Samsung filed for trademark registration of an Iris Scanner with the European Union, the South Korean company launched the Galaxy Tab Iris with iris recognition technology in India. The tablet incorporates a secure biometric device for authenticating users.

A few days ago, Samsung filed trademark documentation allegedly for including an iris scanner on the upcoming Galaxy Note 7. Now, it seems that the company went ahead and launched the Galaxy Tab Iris which features technology for authenticating users through a biometric device.

The tablet will come with cashless and paperless features that could be used for performing banking operations or using eGovernance services like taxation, education or healthcare.

The Galaxy Tab Iris will be available to government officials and enterprises based in India. The device comes with Aadhar authentication, which is a system of 12-digit individual identification numbers. Galaxy Tab Iris also complies with the government's Standardization Testing and Quality Certification (STQC).

It will allow banks and financial institutions to streamline the process of user authentication. Officials will no longer need to use separate devices for biometric identification.

Galaxy Tab Iris would be Samsung’s first Android device that incorporates an iris scanner, after Microsoft’s Lumia 950 and 950 XL included this technology. As it turns out, Apple is also considering including an iris scanner on its upcoming iPhone 7.

Galaxy Tab Iris has a 7.0-inch screen, but only 8GB of internal memory

Along with the Galaxy Tab Iris, Samsung will also provide an Identity SDK for developers to build solutions catering to their needs, like financial inclusion, payments and authentication solutions.

The embedded Aadhar iris-biometric authentication solution is set to provide more secure identification and verification of users. The tablet will come with a dual-eye scanner for contactless scan and greater security.

It has a 7.0-inch display and 5MP auto focus rear camera for taking pictures or scanning documents. Galaxy Tab Iris weighs 327g and is 9.7mm thin. It comes with USB OTG Host and Bluetooth 4.1 connectivity. It supports 14 local languages and comes with 8GB memory, as well as up to 200GB expandable storage. The tablet will draw power from a 3,600mAh battery.

Samsung Galaxy Tab Iris is priced at $200 (€180) and will come with Android Lollipop 5.0.
