Samsung Electronics just launched their new Exynos 9820 SoC for mobile devices featuring a high-performance Mali-G76 MP12 GPU, an enhanced neural processing unit (NPU), as well as a 2 Gbps LTE modem for lightning speed mobile connectivity.

The Exynos 9820 chipset is built using an 8nm LPP (Low Power Plus) FinFET process, and it features a tri-cluster CPU architecture with two fourth generation custom cores, two Cortex-A75 performance cores, as well as four Cortex-A55 cores designed to manage the SoC's efficiency.

Compared to the previous 9810 generation, the Exynos 9820 replaced two of the custom CPU cores with 2 Cortex-75s and had made a step up from 10 nm to 8 nm which comes with 10% less power consumption.

"Exynos 9820’s new fourth-generation custom core delivers around 20-percent improvement in single core performance or 40-percent in power efficiency when compared to its predecessor which can load data or switch between apps much faster," says Samsung in their press release. "In addition, the multi-core performance is also increased by around 15 percent."

The Mali-G76 GPU provide more than 40% increase in performance

Furthermore, the built-in Mali-G76 GPU cores provide users with up to 40% performance boost and a 35% power savings according to Samsung.

The Exynos 9820 also bundles a multi-format codec (MFC) with support for 4K UHD video decoding and encoding at 150 frames per second, as well as 10-bit rendering for the most accurate color representation.

Moreover, Samsung's new Exynos 9820 SoC features a hardware AI-accelerator also called NPU designed to allow the mobile devices it powers to perform artificial intelligence tasks roughly ten times faster than devices bundling the Exynos 9810.

“The AI capabilities in the Exynos 9 Series 9820 will provide a new dimension of performance in smart devices through an integrated NPU, high-performance fourth-generation custom CPU core, 2.0Gbps LTE modem and improved multimedia performance," said Ben Hur, Samsung Electronics VP.
