Samsung has just released a new smartphone that runs its proprietary Tizen OS for mobile devices, the Samsung Z4. The device is the fourth Samsung smartphone to run Tizen, an operating system that can be found on Samsung smartwatches and TVs.

Samsung’s open-source alternative to Android hasn’t really kicked off when it comes to smartphones, as the South Korean company only released four such devices running Tizen, at a pace of about two per year.

The latest Samsung smartphone to run Tizen is the Z4, after the Z1 was launched in India two years ago, the Z3 came about nine months later and the Z2 was announced back in August, as the first 4G smartphone to run Tizen OS.

Samsung Z4 also features 4G connectivity and comes with a 4.5-inch display with 480 x 800 pixel resolution and just 1GB of RAM. It runs a quad-core 1.5 GHz processor and has a 5MP camera in the front and back.

Still, the Z4 is the first Tizen smartphone to feature a 2.5D curved glass screen, which is found on many premium smartphones from this year. Battery capacity inside the new phone reaches 2,050mAh and the device offers USB 2.0 port, Bluetooth 4.0 and a dual-SIM variant depending on the market.

“The Samsung Z4 brings a simplified mobile experience to first time smartphone users and represents our ongoing commitment to expanding the Tizen ecosystem,” said DJ Koh, President of Mobile Communications Business, Samsung Electronics.

Samsung didn’t reveal pricing for the new Samsung Z4 phone, but since the Z2 carried a price tag of $68, the newly released phone should cost less than $100. The Z4 will be made available in a number of countries, starting with India, this month. The phone maker has said that it intends to showcase the new phone during the Tizen Developer Conference in San Francisco next week, scheduled between May 16 and 17.
