Samsung puts high value in edge variants

Last year, Samsung's Galaxy S6 series managed to capture the market’s attention with its powerful specs and its very attractive design. The South Korean giant introduced two flagships, the Galaxy S6 with a flat display and Galaxy S6 edge with a dual curved screen.

Not even Samsung expected the Galaxy S6 edge to have such a resounding success, but it did take note and prepared better for the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge release. This means that the company adjusted yields so that they would match demand.

Production yields for the dual-edge display stabilized, thus giving Samsung a chance to consider a permanent change in the design of Galaxy S smartphones. As such, Korea Herald reports that the manufacturer might stop producing Galaxy S smartphones with a flat design.

“Samsung has considered that it would make the edge display as the identity of the Galaxy S smartphone lineup,” states the company’s Mobile Chief Dong-jin Koh. Samsung has also said that sales of the Galaxy S7 edge have exceeded those of the flat display variant.

Samsung Galaxy S8 might come with just a dual-edge variant

This means that next year's Galaxy S could come with a dual-curved display, and the flat screen variant would no longer be produced. However, it's too early to say for sure that the Galaxy S8 will come with a dual-curved display, but it does make sense.

Samsung has just recently released its latest flagship, the Galaxy Note 7, and while the smartphone has impressed with its powerful specs, iris scanner and new features in the S Pen, the design has been one major subject of discussion. Prior to the release, there were many rumors according to which Samsung would release only a dual-edge variant of the Note 7, which prompted some fans to stress that they weren't that excited about this type of design.

A flat variant of the Note 7 even leaked in images online, prompting some to still hope that Samsung would release it. When the Galaxy Note 7 was officially introduced, it became clear that Samsung intended to gradually shift towards flagships with dual-edge displays.
