Getting the iPhone X display right was quite a challenge, with the notch at the top of the screen said to have caused particular trouble to Apple and its partners, eventually contributing to the delay the device is currently experiencing in shipments across the world.

But despite taking longer to enter mass production, it turns out that it all happened for a reason, as Apple wanted this to be the best display ever created for a smartphone. And according to the experts at DisplayMate, this is exactly what it is.

The Samsung-built iPhone X screen “is the most innovative and high-performance smartphone display we have ever tested,” the research shows, with DisplayMate engineers congratulating both Samsung and Apple for making this possible.

While Samsung was responsible for the hardware part of the display, Apple contributed to its high performance with perfect calibration, they claim.

Best display ever

The display thus achieves the highest absolute color accuracy for any display (measured as 0.9JNCD), which DisplayMate says “is visually indistinguishable from perfect.” Additionally, at 634 nits it offers the highest full-screen brightness for OLED smartphones, while the 141-points rating brought it the award for the highest full-screen contrast display in ambient light.

The evaluation also praised the iPhone X screen for the highest contrast ratio, the lowest screen reflectance, and the smallest brightness variation with viewing angle.

“The iPhone X delivers uniformly consistent all around Top Tier display performance and receives All Green (Very Good to Excellent) Ratings in all of the DisplayMate Lab test and measurement Categories (except for a single Yellow in Brightness Variation with Average Picture Level that applies to all OLED displays),” DisplayMate says.

And while all these tests appear to indicate that the iPhone X display is flawless, this doesn’t necessarily mean that all customers are getting the same experience when purchasing the device. A number of buyers complained of display issues on the iPhone X, with Apple itself playing the safe card and explaining that part of the behavior is normal despite looking otherwise.
