New data confirms that Samsung is once again the world’s leading phone maker after a solid performance in the first quarter of the year.

The South Korean company shipped a total of 77 million units in Q1, enough to secure the leading position in the global phone market. This means Samsung controls a 23 percent market share, with Strategy Analytics telling Yonhap news agency that the Galaxy S21 series and the affordable A series are the devices currently spearheading the sales.

Unsurprisingly, Apple is the company taking the runner-up spot, this time with sales of 57 million units. In other words, Apple now has a market share of 17 percent.

Samsung’s foldable push

While the two models mentioned above are the ones currently bringing home the bacon, Samsung is also betting big on foldables, and the company wants this form factor to also benefit from stronger adoption in the short term.

As a result, Samsung wants to make its foldables more affordable, with new devices to be announced in June or July as part of a dedicated hardware event.

“True to our heritage of staying ahead of the curve with trailblazing mobile tech, we’ll be expanding our portfolio of foldables, so this groundbreaking category is more accessible to everyone. And while we’re already known for our revolutionary cameras, we’ll never stop trying to outdo ourselves — so be on the lookout for super-intelligent, pro-grade camera and video capabilities in 2021. We’ve also been paying attention to people’s favorite aspects of the Galaxy Note experience and are excited to add some of its most well-loved features to other devices in our lineup,” Samsung’s president said recently.

Apple is also projected to launch new iPhones in September followed by a new iPhone SE in the spring of 2022.
