Samsung is expected to announce a new smartphone in the Galaxy S series this month, a rugged version of the standard Galaxy S8, which was released earlier this year. The smartphone has just made an appearance on Geekbench and some of its key specs were revealed.

According to a report, the Galaxy S8 Active will come with an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 platform and 4GB of RAM, same as the other two Galaxy S8 smartphones. It will run Android 7.1 Nougat out of the box and support Qi wireless charging.

The rugged Galaxy S8 Active managed to record a score of 1942 during the single-core test and 6394 in the multi-core one, quite similar to the results the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ recorded. The battery capacity is still unknown, but last year’s Galaxy S7 Active featured a 4,000mAh battery, much higher than the standard model’s 3,000mAh juicer.

The Galaxy S8 Active will come with a flat display

Other internals on the rugged variant are expected to stay the same as on the standard model, which means that it will feature a 64GB internal memory capacity, together with a 12MP sensor on the back and an 8MP camera in the front.

The phone will feature IP68 certification against water and dust damages and come with a more durable and rugged body. It will also feature a flat display, compared to the curved screen found on the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+. The Galaxy S8 Active will stay exclusive to US carrier AT&T.

The release date is still unconfirmed, with some reports saying that the smartphone could be released later this month, but that remains to be seen. Aside from the Galaxy S8 Active, Samsung is also preparing to launch the refurbished Galaxy Note FE, which could actually make its debut on July 7 in Korea, with Samsung’s virtual assistant Bixby on board. That being said, the rugged Galaxy S8 Active should also come with the same virtual assistant pre-installed, hopefully with Bixby Voice as well.
