Insert the S Pen wrongly and you might lose its function

Even if the Samsung Galaxy Note5 and Galaxy S6 edge+ have barely been launched, initial testers are already finding flaws with the two phablets.

Yesterday, we told you that the newcomers were found to be aggressively shutting down background tasks. And today we come back to the Galaxy Note5, which apparently features a design quirk that has the potential to actually damage the device and its functionality.

With last year’s Galaxy Note 4, if users accidentally wanted to insert the S Pen backwards into its slot, they were prevented from doing so, as the stylus just wouldn’t go in.

However, the Galaxy Note5 accommodates the S Pen in either direction without much effort from the user or resistance from the device.

But once you realize you’ve inserted the S Pen the wrong way, you’ll probably want to quickly get it out. And you’ll be able to do so, but the whole mechanism that recognizes when the S Pen is attached will be damaged.

On the other hand, the pen could get hopelessly jammed into the slot, and to pull it out, you might need to employ some extra tools.

Be careful how you insert the S Pen in the Galaxy Note5

The folks at Android Police reproduced exactly the scenario we described above and found that their test unit’s S Pen recognition mechanism became completely useless after inserting the stylus the wrong way.

It’s unclear how this mishap got past Samsung’s testing, as the company should have made sure the device was fool-proof against this kind of scenario, which happens pretty often.

So if you too have a Samsung Galaxy Note5 or are planning to get one in the near future, let this be a word of warning to you: be extremely careful how you insert the S Pen into the slot. Or you may end up losing its functionality.

Samsung has yet to comment on the situation, but we hope that the company will soon acknowledge the issue and offer some solutions, in case such damage occurs.
