Two months ago, a scratch test on the Samsung Galaxy Note 7’s display caused some controversy and showed that the smartphone might be vulnerable to scratches and damages to the screen. The device is covered with Corning Gorilla Glass 5.

The test showed that the device suffered scratches when using level 3 tools, while most smartphones, including the Galaxy S7 edge, suffer scratches around level 6. The Galaxy Note 7 is covered by Corning’s latest Gorilla Glass, which promises enhanced protection against scratches and drops.

The results were quite surprising and even prompted a response from Corning. The company dismissed the test conducted in the video and tried to question the test’s reliability. Corning also said that residuals from the pick were mistaken for scratches, seeing how the display has a high resistance to scratches.

Galaxy Note 7 suffered scratches at level 6 and 7 in the new test

It seems that JerryRigEverything returned with a new test on the Galaxy Note 7. The YouTuber mentioned that he conducted two scratch tests on the Note 7 and they both had visible marks at level 3. The reviewer recently bought a new set of Mohs picks for conducting yet another test on the Galaxy Note 7. The new test shows the Gorilla Glass 5 on the Note 7 scratches at levels 6 and 7.

The results of the previous test involved a factor that the reviewer didn’t see at first. He used to sharp the Mohs pick with a sharpener made out of Aluminum Oxide and Silicon Carbide, both of which rank 8 or 9 on the Mohs scale of hardness. Particles from the sharpener were transferred on the Mohs pick and caused the unusual results.

He also explained that it took nearly two months to redo the test because of the Note 7 recall. The results of the new test are encouraging, but they don’t do much to help the Galaxy Note 7’s image. The smartphone may be facing a second recall, as reports of flaming units continue to surface online.
