Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Note 7 on August 2 and launched pre-orders shortly after. The smartphone is expected to hit stores on August 19, but it seems that some US carriers have already started shipping it. A drop test recently posted on YouTube shows how durable the handset really is.

YouTube user Xeetechcare has posted a video with the Galaxy Note 7 during a drop test. The unit shown in the video is brand new, as it was unboxed at the beginning of the test. The protective seals on the back and front of the smartphone were removed just before the experiment started.

The Black Onyx variant of the Galaxy Note 7 was dropped three times on the back, side, and front. The device was booted so that viewers could see that it was in working shape. The user also mentions that he is 6.3 feet tall, which is the equivalent of 1.9 meters, and the smartphone was dropped from waist point.

The Galaxy Note 7 is the first handset ever to feature Gorilla Glass 5, which is said to offer protection against phone drops from about a meter high. Corning, the company that manufactures Gorilla Glass 5, claims that the protective glass can survive about 80% of the time when dropped from 1.6 meters on rough surfaces.

The Galaxy Note 7 unit got a crack and some scratches

During the test, the Galaxy Note 7 was dropped on such a rough surface, on the street. The test debuted with the phone being dropped on its back. Although no major damage was recorded, it did get slightly cracked on the right bottom corner of the back panel. During the side drop test, the S Pen slightly came out, and scratches were seen near the S Pen area.

The front-facing drop didn't cause any crack on the smartphone, but a small scratch was seen on the top area. The test shows that the device is vulnerable at the edges when it comes to drops on rough surfaces from waist point, and scratches could occur on the aluminum surface. But most importantly, the display didn't suffer any major scratches or cracks, and the smartphone was fully responsive following the test.
