Samsung is known to put effort into staying one step ahead of the competition by introducing all sorts of innovative designs and features. The South-Korean company has patented quite a few devices over the years, and it looks like another patent application from Samsung Display has just surfaced today.

Samsung Display seems to have filed a patent for a 3-in-1 device, one that would incorporate multiple functions. The news has surfaced today, and we are also shown how the potential device would transform from a watch into a phone and even a tablet, according to SamMobile.

The patent application was filed in 2014 at the Korean Intellectual Property Office, and the most interesting thing about this new device is the flexible OLED display. It's the one feature that would make it possible for the handset to fold into a smartwatch, stretch into a phone or fold out and become a tablet. It seems a rather futuristic idea, one that won't see the light of day anytime soon.

Still, the images that came together with the patent application are enough to get us interested, even if they showcase a concept, rather than an actual product.

Samsung may release a foldable smartphone in 2017

The South Korean giant has filed many other patents for flexible OLED displays. In fact, last year, the Project Valley patent surfaced and showed Samsung's idea of a foldable phone. Then, the company was said to be testing two variants of the Galaxy X smartphone, one with Snapdragon 620 and the other with a Snapdragon 820 chipset. They were believed to come with 3GB of RAM.

Another Samsung patent surfaced last month, revealing the design of the foldable smartphone. We also know that it was filed half a year ago, and it revealed that the phone would charge in the folded position.

Rumor has it that Samsung might be unveiling such a phone with 4K display in 2017, but that remains to be seen.
