Report suggests the 3.5mm audio connector is going dark

Apple ditched the headphone jack when it launched the iPhone 7, and while Samsung originally appeared to resist this new trend, it looks like the South Korean may embrace the idea as well.

This is one of the options currently being explored within the company, according to a report from Bloomberg, as one of the Galaxy S10 prototypes that was created by Samsung doesn’t come with a headphone jack.

A final decision on this hasn’t been made just yet, and Samsung is expected to choose whether to offer a 3.5mm audio connector by the end of the year, just ahead of the beginning of Galaxy S10 mass production.

At the same time, the cited source says the entry-level configuration would come with a 5.8-inch non-curved display and lack a fingerprint sensor embedded into the screen. This is part of Samsung’s cost-saving push for this particular model, as the company wants it to be marketed as the affordable Galaxy S10 version. 4GB RAM is also expected on this version.

5G version on its way

On the other hand, Bloomberg says Samsung is working on more significant upgrades for the other models in the Galaxy S10 lineup, and many of them have already made the rounds lately.

For example, the company is preparing a triple-lens camera on the top S10, a feature that would give the South Koreans a substantial advantage in the first against Apple’s iPhone. Huawei has already embraced this camera upgrade, and Apple could do the same with the 2019 iPhone generation.

The fingerprint sensor would also be embedded into the screen on the top S10, and so would the front-facing camera. It’s believed Samsung could drill holes into the display for this approach to work correctly, and the Galaxy A8s could be the first model to bring such an implementation to the market.

A 5G version of the Galaxy S10 could also be released, and the report indicates that Samsung may be working with Verizon to launch it in the United States. This model could make it to other markets as well where 5G networks are available.
