New LPDDR4 memory chips with 12Gb capacity have been announced by Samsung. Dedicated for high-performance smartphones and tablets, the new chips will satisfy the requirements of ultra-fast dynamic random access memory.

Operating at an incredible effective clock rate frequency of 4266MHz, much faster than even today's PC DDR4 memory modules, the chip features an incredible capacity of 12Gb, or 1.5GB, with a 32-bit wide bus, spread between two separate 16-bit buses, while having a peak memory bandwidth of 17GB/s.

Apparently, Samsung will sell its new 12Gb LPDDR4 memory devices in 3GB and 6GB packages, helping mobile devices like smartphones and tablets with unprecedented amount of dynamic random access memory; yes, that means you'll be looking at future phones equipped with 6GB of RAM.

The new Samsung memory chips are made using the 20nm-class process technology and are much more eco-friendly than the old DDR3 and the new DDR4 memory modules, since consume about 1.1V compared to DDR4's 1.2V. Such numbers are incredible indeed since they actually promise the ideal specs of both worlds: high frequency with small energy consumption. It may seem unreal, but it's impossible not to be a downside to all that after all.

Bigger, better, faster

This sort of memory is currently used in smartphones and tablets thanks to their size and energy consumption, but it wouldn't be unheard of if more slim notebook manufacturers will switch to LPDDR instead of SODIMMs in order to prolong battery life, now that clock-rates have gone so much higher. This way, Samsung wants to dominate the DRAM market by offering incredible cross-platform flexibility and competitive price.

One of the main companies that will profit from this development will be none other than Apple that already uses LPDDR3 memory instead of PC DRAM in its Apple MacBook devices.

There hasn't been any clear date or availability for the new Samsung chips, but it's likely they'll arrive in the next few weeks.
