14 DAY TRIAL // Samsung was highly busy last week with the launch event of its high-end Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+, but that’s not all the Korean tech giant produced during this period.
Sammy has also unveiled a new handset exclusively available for the Chinese market, and given the preferences of this sector, it’s not a surprise that the device is actually a flip phone.
Clamshells are pretty en vogue in Asia, so Samsung is catering to this particular niche with the SM-G9198. But while most models currently being offered today come with pretty middle-range specs, the new Samsung flip phone bundles quite high-end features.
The new clamshell takes advantage of hexa-core power
The phone arrives with a 3.9-inch Super AMOLED display with 1280 x 768 pixel resolution. The device features a screen which is visible when you flip open the phone, while the other is seen when the display has been folded over the keyboard.
The handset is powered by a high-end Snapdragon 808 processor which is the same silicon bit that pumps life into flagships like the LG G4. We’re not told the amount of RAM we should see onboard, but we have to guess it’s at least 2GB.
Samsung also throws in 16GB of internal storage, expandable up to 128GB via microSD card slot.
Moreover, the phone features a 16MP main camera (f1.9 aperture size) in combination with an atypical 6MP front-facing shooter to be used for selfies and video calls.
The clamshell draws power from a 2,020 mAh battery (which according to Samsung should provide up to 189 hours of standby time).
It’s highly unlikely that Samsung will be offering the phone outside the confines of China, as in the Western world clamshells have fallen out of fashion. Still in Asian countries, sales are still going strong and Samsung’s latest model will certainly appeal those who want higher-end flip phones.
