Samsung will provide chips and displays for the new line

Back in December 2014, word got out that Xiaomi might be looking to enter the laptop market. Currently, the company is selling handsets, tablets, wearables, plus other accessories. But the Chinese device maker is apparently interested in branching out and infiltrating itself into niches it hasn’t dabbed into before. Like laptops, for instance.

Still, months have passed by and we haven’t heard anything else about the purported portable device. Until now, when a new report coming out of hit and miss Asian publication DigiTimes claims that Xiaomi has partnered up with Invantec and Foxconn for the creation of a laptop line due to make it out into the wild in early 2016.

A separate report coming out of Bloomberg, indicates that Samsung will also help Xiaomi achieve its goal and will provide the company with chips and displays for the new family of products.

Linux might be the OS of choice for Xiaomi's first notebook

Interestingly enough, the Chinese report says that the first laptop coming out of Xiaomi will be a 15-inch notebook (the mainstream size in China) and will run Linux. Furthermore, we’re told the device won’t be priced all that affordable, as it’s expected to be sold on the market for $471 / €419.

Earlier, we saw a purported image of the Xiaomi notebook leak into the wild, so we’re taking the opportunity to share it with you once again. Ever since its inception, Xiaomi has been accused of copying the design of Apple products, and even this laptop seems to bear a strong MacBook Air resemblance.

One can clearly spot the MI logo located up in front, colored in bright orange.

Previous rumors would have us believe that the device will make a debut into the wild with a 15-inch display with 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution. Power will apparently come from an Intel Haswell i7-4500u processor with 2 x 8GB dual channel memory. Still, Intel has pushed out the Intel Core M platform (based on Broadwell), so the Xiaomi laptop will probably launch with this chipset on board instead.

If the information we shared with you here proves to be real, would you consider abandoning ASUS, Lenovo or other popular laptop makers in favor of Xiaomi’s Linux lappy?
