The world’s most used open-source software solution for accessing shared Windows folders over a network from GNU/Linux and Mac OS X operating systems, Samba, has recently been updated to version 4.2.3.

Samba 4.2.3 is the third maintenance release of the stable 4.2 branch of the acclaimed software and it fixes over 40 issues reported by users or discovered by the Samba development team since the previous release of the application, Samba 4.2.2.

According to the changelog, which we've attached at the end of the article for reference, Samba 4.2.3 is here to add IPv6 support to the ADS (Active Directory Server) client side to which Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) connects.

It also adds IPv6 support for determining Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) during Active Directory Server (ADS) join, and enables IPv6-based DNS (Domain Name Server) connections for ADS clients on Amazon S3.

GnuTLS 3.4 is now supported by Samba, the tdb_chainlock_read_nonblock() function has been added, padding has been brought to the last command in compound requests for S3:SMB2, and the "veto_appledouble" option has been implemented in vfs_fruit.

There are numerous other important fixes

Among other changes, we can mention the inclusion of SMB3 encryption in the description of "smb encrypt," as well as the usage of a separate flag to track the state of the become_root() and unbecome_root() functions.

Furthermore, a codenomicon crash in the do_smb_load_module() function has been addressed, the 'testparm --show-all-parameters' option has been patched, and there's now support for syncing secrets.ldb into secrets.tdb during startup.

Last but not least, GNUism has been fixed for ncacn_http, as well as the fsmo transfer exception in s4.2/fsmo.py. Download Samba 4.2.3 for Linux and Mac OS X operating systems right now from Softpedia.
