Salix OS developer Dimitris Tzemos announced this past weekend the availability for download and public testing of the first Release Candidate (RC) development version of the upcoming Salix Xfce 14.2 Live Edition.

The Salix Xfce 14.2 operating system landed on the last day of August, exactly two months ago, but it's only distributed as installable-only ISO images for 64- and 32-bit hardware architectures, so live mediums are always delivered a few weeks later after the official release of the Slackware-based GNU/Linux distribution.

The Salix Xfce 14.2 Live Edition has been in development since then, and it looks like it's getting closer to a final release. The first RC build is now available for final testing, and if no major blockers are found during its test period, it will become the final, production-ready version of the distribution.

"I hope no problems will be reported and this will be renamed to the final release," said Dimitris Tzemos in the release announcement. "For live environment, standard user is 'one' with password: 'one'. User 'one' is a super user. This is what you need to use applications need super user privileges."

Here are Salix Xfce 14.2 Live Edition's features

Salix Xfce 14.2 Live Edition will include the same features as Salix 14.2 Xfce Edition, starting with the brand new in-house built utilities, namely GUEFI boot manager for UEFI systems and GTKRepoSetup GUI for the command-line reposetup tool, the long-term supported Linux 4.4.19 kernel, as well as GLibc (GNU C Library) 2.23.

Moreover, users will find GCC (GNU Compiler Collection) 5.3.0, Mozilla Firefox as default web browser, the latest LLVM/Clang compiler, the eudev device management system, new and beautiful artwork, a new software repository called "extra," which includes thousands of packages for you to install, and much more.

Until the final release of the Salix Xfce 14.2 Live Edition arrives, you can jump into RC testing by downloading this first, and probably the last Release Candidate milestone and help the development team address the remaining issues.
