The image has since been deleted, but it lives forever

Russia used a video screenshot from a game named AC-130 Gunship Simulator to show that US troops are somehow protecting a retreating ISIS convoy.

Russia has been saying for some time now that US is helping ISIS in various ways, despite how weird that might sound. Putting aside the reasons why the US would be assisting a terrorist organization that they’ve been fighting for the past couple of years, the claims made by Russia seemed to be groundless.

Well, it looks like evidence has been made available showing unequivocally that the United States is indeed working with the enemy, and that they are in fact protecting ISIS retreating from the advance of Russian troops.

Almost had us

They would have gotten away with it if not for that meddling kids, and by meddling kinds we mean Mashable. It turns out that the proof posted by Russia’s Ministry of Defense was actually from a game named AC-130 Gunship Simulator, which is not even released.

Granted, they scoured for the right image and they used a still from a developer video from all the way back in 2015, in the hope that it might be obscure enough so no one will notice.

Of course, they have underestimated the attention span of gamers that can spot a single frame from a video and tell you exactly where it’s from.

Since then, The Defense Minister has removed the image and deleted the Tweet, which was to be expected since they were caught.

On the other hand, we have to take a step back and consider something that’s more than troubling. Games are becoming more and more accurate, and pretty soon it will be impossible to tell if something is computer generated or from real life.

Fortunately, we’re not there yet, and gamers are more prevalent than governments give them credit for, so we seem to be safe for now.
