The newly created flag honors the traditional family

In late June, the US Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage across all 50 states, and the colors of the LGBT community's rainbow flag were projected onto the White House to celebrate this historic ruling.

In response to the US Supreme Court's move to make same-sex marriage legal, Russia's government fashioned a “straight pride” flag meant to honor the traditional family, i.e. one man, one woman and their children.

Take that, all ye LGBTs

The Russian “straight pride” flag is the work of President Vladimir Putin's ruling party, Metro reports. It shows two parents and their three children, all holding hands. It comes with its own hashtag, which translates as “a real family.”

Quite satisfied with their work, the Russian government admitted that the flag was created not only as a celebration of the traditional family but, more importantly, as a counter to the LGBT community's rainbow one.

“This is our response to same-sex marriage, to this mockery of the concept of the family,” said Andrei Lisovenko, deputy head of the United Russia's Moscow branch.

“We have to warn against gay-fever at home and support traditional values in our country,” he added.

Why the Russian government seems to think that couples must necessarily have no more and no less than three children to quality as a traditional family and, therefore, be worthy of admiration remains a mystery.

The flag was unveiled on Russia's Day of Family

Each year, on July 8, Russia celebrates the Day of Family, Love and Fidelity. Since the newly created “straight pride” flag is meant to honor the traditional family, it makes sense that it was unveiled on this very special day.

Unfortunately, the big unveiling of the Russian government's “straight pride” flag was tainted by people's reactions to it. As surprising as this may sound, there were folks who dared poke fun at the initiative.
